Starting a new business - my first thoughts

This is my first blog post since 2006, when I wrote about becoming a father for the first time. Lots has changed since then! I’m blessed with a beautiful family, a fun hobby, and a career that has taught me so much.

When I turned 40, I asked myself, “What’s next?” So, I decided to start a business doing something I truly love!

What is it, you ask? Keep reading!

Many people don’t know I once had a small business selling souvenir t-shirts in Amsterdam

It was an existing business I took over for family, helping them build a brand.

I asked myself, “Where do I start?”

My experience as an auditor helped. I knew how to track finances and understood small retail business processes.

I gathered all the customer and supplier information, contacted everyone, and hoped for the best.

One contact told me:

“Business is a matter of people wanting to work with each other.”

I’ve realized this is true—building trusting relationships is key.

The t-shirt business grew quickly! In just a few months, I was selling over 2,000 t-shirts a month.

I sold at night (souvenir shops are open late) and delivered on weekends.

But I was too busy—balancing family, my audit career, and studies.

No one in the family wanted to take over, so I closed the business.

I personally thanked all my contacts with a parting gift.

This experience taught me that one day, I’d start another business.

Over the years, I had many ideas:

  • A new food concept from Israel
  • Tech ideas for apps
  • Fitness-related innovations

But I wasn’t ready. I wanted to make sure I had the time to commit.

Fast-forward ten years—now I’ve finally done it!

After 14 years as a finance professional, I decided to create a business focused on what I love:

Data-driven advisory services for reporting and compliance processes.

I enjoy figuring out what data managers need to make informed decisions on time.

But it’s not always easy.

Combining data from different sources, ensuring quality, and meeting compliance requirements can be a puzzle.

Often, companies lack:

  • Standardized processes
  • Proper documentation
  • Trained employees

Success always comes down to people, processes, and systems.

Reportright was born to help businesses improve these areas.

We’re open for business and look forward to working with great teams in a practical way.

Best,
Jonathan ~ Team Reportright
